This piece was published in Volume 28 Issue 2, 2021 of the International Union Rights Journal. It was written in the backdrop of the April 2021 violent repression of a workers’ strike at a power station in Banshkhali, Bangladesh. Seven workers were shot dead at Banshkhali due to their very legitimate strike demanding payment of wage arrears, an increase in wages, reduction of work hours to half-day on Fridays and iftar break during Ramadan. One of the most severe recent cases of strike repression, and not the first instance of killing at the controversial coal-fired power plant either, has remained largely overlooked by the global unions.
